LASIK and Spring: What You Should Know

Spring is a time of new beginnings. Isn’t it time you experienced its beauty without relying on eyeglasses and contacts? In this blog post, we’ll discuss the differences of experiencing spring before and after LASIK, talk about flying and cost concerns surrounding the procedure, and show how you can explore if LASIK is right for you.

How will you experience spring?

There are two ways you can experience spring: Before LASIK (the way you always have) or after LASIK (with clearer vision). Let’s look at how your spring experience can change before and after LASIK.

Spring before LASIK:

  • You may need your glasses before you can view the beauty of spring.
  • You run the risk of irritating your allergies, because when you put your contact lenses on, you may be trapping pollen in your eyes. [1]
  • You always need to travel with your glasses, contact lenses, and/or contact solution.

Spring after LASIK:

  • You can always view the beauty of spring.
  • Your allergies symptoms may not be as bad, since you won’t trap pollen in your contact lenses.
  • You’re likely able to travel with less, because you aren’t as reliant on prescription eyewear to see.

Can you fly after LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK certainly has its benefits. But here’s one more: You likely won’t need to wait long after getting LASIK before you can fly.

If you’re planning on flying after LASIK eye surgery, keep the following in mind:

  • You’ll want to keep your eyes closed after surgery, especially in the first four hours following the procedure. As long as you make sure your flight schedule doesn’t interfere with your post-operative check-ups, there’s typically no harm in flying right after LASIK.
  • We recommend waiting after your one-day post-op check-in before flying. This is especially true if you want your LASIK surgeon doing your post-op.
  • It’s incredibly important that you see your doctor the next day on the off chance that there are any problems. While serious issues are rare [2], if problems arise after surgery, your doctor can better address them when they can see you right away during your post-op.
  • It’s also important that you go to your other check-ins, so your doctor can verify that there are no new problems that develop as you continue to heal.

When you’re ready to start flying after laser eye surgery, make sure you keep your eyedrops close by and use them regularly. Being at 30,000 feet can cause your eyes to feel dry by itself, but you may experience extra dryness during your recovery period after LASIK, particularly during your first month after your procedure.

LASIK may be more affordable than you think

Given the benefits of LASIK, you may be wondering what it will cost. The answer is probably less than you think! In fact, when you compare LASIK eye surgery costs to the lifetime expenses of eyeglasses and contact lenses, it’s quite affordable. Over time, LASIK can actually save you thousands of dollars by avoiding the costs associated with glasses and contacts. When you get your tax return, LASIK might be worth the investment!

Most LASIK Doctor Network offices provide financing options, including interest-free plans. This allows you to pay for LASIK incrementally. Contact your local LASIK doctor for more details.

One final note

When you get your tax refund this spring, make it an investment in you.

Please keep in mind that this blog post is not meant to constitute medical advice, so be sure to speak directly with a healthcare professional with any medically related questions.

Though it has an incredibly high success rate [4], LASIK, like any procedure, comes with certain risks, but long-term risks are extremely rare [5].
