Paul Azar, M.D.
Dr. Paul Azar Jr., a third-generation ophthalmologist with over 40 years of experience, has made significant contributions to eye care in Acadiana and beyond. After earning his B.S. cum laude from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and completing his M.D. and residency at LSU, he pursued fellowships in pediatric ophthalmology, cornea, and pathology at Union University. A pioneer in eye surgery, Dr. Azar introduced microscopic surgery, intraocular lens implantation, and FDA-approved laser procedures such as LASIK and PRK to the region. A veteran of 27 years of military service, he played a key role in rebuilding LSU’s ophthalmology training program post-Hurricane Katrina and served as medical director of the Cajundome shelter. Dr. Azar has performed over 40,000 cataract surgeries and 10,000 refractive surgeries, earning numerous awards, including the Civic Cup and LSU Alumnus of the Year. He continues to practice, focusing on corneal, pediatric, and refractive conditions, while also teaching as a full professor at LSU and Tulane.
