Sandra Yeh, M.D., founder, and Medical Director of Prairie Eye Center, earned her medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago in 1986. Following her internship at Northwestern, she pursued a residency in ophthalmology at Indiana University Medical Center. Upon relocating to Springfield, she initially joined the practice of Michael Walsh, M.D. After Dr. Walsh’s retirement, Dr. Yeh expanded her practice to its current location at 2020 West Iles Ave., Springfield, Illinois. Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of prestigious organizations like the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Sangamon County Medical Society, Dr. Yeh has been appointed as an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dedicated to serving her community, Dr. Yeh accepts Medicare assignments and warmly welcomes new patients at the Springfield location.

Dr. Phillip Alward, M.D., joined Prairie Eye Center in April 2017, bringing a wealth of expertise and innovation to the practice. Graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1973, he pursued his M.D. at Chicago Medical School, graduating with distinction in the top third of his class. Following residencies at St. Louis Group Hospitals and the University of Illinois Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Alward embarked on a distinguished career in teaching and research, specializing in glaucoma. His pioneering work led to the development of several groundbreaking technologies for eye health and surgical instruments, including the intraocular lens implant, iris retractor, and nucleus stabilizer, revolutionizing the field of ophthalmology. At Prairie Eye Center, Dr. Alward diagnoses, treats, and performs various surgeries for a wide range of eye conditions, including dry eyes, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other retinal disorders. Recognized for his exceptional expertise, Dr. Alward has been consistently nominated for inclusion in “The Best Doctors in America: Midwest Region” for the past 15 years, reflecting his commitment to excellence in patient care and innovation in ophthalmology.

Dr. William Yang, M.D., brings a unique blend of academic excellence and humanitarian experience to Prairie Eye Center. After earning his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Chicago in 1998, Dr. Yang dedicated two years to service with the Peace Corps in Morocco, where he developed a deep appreciation for global healthcare needs. Upon his return to the United States, he pursued his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin before completing his ophthalmology training at Texas Tech University. Dr. Yang further honed his expertise through a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Albany Medical College in New York. Since joining Prairie Eye Center in August 2010, Dr. Yang has been committed to providing exceptional care to his patients, with a focus on corneal transplants and cataract surgery. He holds hospital privileges at all hospitals in Springfield and Illinois and accepts Medicare assignments, working with most insurance plans to ensure accessibility to quality eye care for all patients.
